Sri Lanka a Guide to Colombo – So you’ve made it to Sri Lanka! Chances are, your first stop on your island tour is the bustling city of Colombo. As the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo is known to be a bit hectic. However, don’t let this deter you from getting out and exploring. The city itself is super easy to navigate and you can easily see all the main tourist attractions in just a few days.
Transportation
The best way to get around Sri Lanka and Colombo specifically is either by Tuk Tuk, or with a ride share app called Pick Me. Be sure to download Pick Me ahead of time. Once installed you will find that they offer the best competitive prices for tourists!
Note
If you are travelling to the city from the airport like we did, please be aware of the following (as of August 2019). The airport itself is about a 45 minute drive from the main city of Colombo. The normal price you should pay to get into the city should be around 2,000 rupees. Taxis will try to rip you off, try your best to negotiate.
Our recommendation would be to either book a taxi pickup with your hotel, or download the ride share app Pick Me to your phone ahead of time. Pick Me will have fares much cheaper than just asking a taxi in person. Also, it is important to note there is heightened security at the Colombo airport. Due to the recent events, only certified drivers are allowed to enter the airport. For this reason, ride share apps do have a tougher time getting inside, so just keep that in mind!
