Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia, and has been the capital of Cambodia since the French colonisation. Situated next to the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find some of the most beautiful river walks, bars and local parks along its banks.
With Cambodia being known to have some of the most beautiful colonial buildings, Phnom Penh is no acceptation. The French influence is found all throughout Phnom Penh. So for us, it is one of the reasons why we love walking around and exploring this incredible city. Here are the best things to do in Phnom Penh
HOW TO GET THERE
Traveling to Phnom Penh is relatively easy, as this is the capital of Cambodia. It can often be the main port of entrance if you’re flying into Cambodia. Additionally, like with all cities in Cambodia, you’re able to travel here by bus. Times and travel distance all depends on what city you’re coming from. However, since Phnom Penh is located pretty centrally in Cambodia, you’re never too far from another city.

WHAT TO DO
Killing Fields and S21
Unfortunately, Cambodia has a troubled past with the rise and fall of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge were an oppressive and repressive regime that took over Cambodia in the 1970’s. The horrific result of this regime left many dead, 1.3 million people were killed (25% Cambodian Population). As a result of this genocide, Cambodia was left crippled. The horrors of war can still be seen till this day. As much as a blog, or history lesson can teach you about the atrocities that happened.
It is important that if you’re in Phnom Penh, you visit the killing fields and S21 museum. To learn about the impact that the Khmer Rouge had on Cambodia. It is definitely an eye opener and not for the faint of heart. Be prepared for a heavy day, but one we think is essential during your trip to Cambodia. Booking a tour is easy, you can either find tuk tuk driver or pre book one here.

Museum
The national museum of Cambodia is the largest museum in the country. Holding some of the countries most important historical and cultural artefacts. The building itself is worth the visit, with a grand entrance that makes for a great photo opportunity. One thing to mention is the price of admission. It costs $10 to enter, which maybe a bit steep for some backpackers. Don’t let this deter you from coming, it still worth the visit even if you don’t pay the entrance fee.

WHERE TO EAT
Local BBQ and Street Food
All throughout Cambodia you’ll find street vendors selling all types of food. For us the Street BBQ was probably the best we had had in a while. Our only advice would be to find a street vendor that is busy. If its busy it means its probably good !!!
Mollydas Sandwich Shop
If you’re look for a sandwich sub then you need to look no further than Mollydas Sandwich shop. With a large menu and home made bread, you’ll be coming back here for breakfast and lunch more often than not. For us, our favourite was the Caesar salad sandwich, or the Italian Sub.
Backyard
For the vegans and vegetarians reading this, Backyard Cafe and Restaurant is the ultimate veggie heaven. Their menu is filled to the brim with power bowls, Acai bowls, falafel and so much more. Both of us ate here for dinner, eating the no pasta lasagne and falafel bowl. This in all honesty, was one of our favourite meals in Phnom Penh.
Little Lounge
This small but beautiful little ramen lounge can be a bit difficult to find, as it is located down the bottom of an ally way. But for those of you who are willing to venture to find this place, you’ll definitely not be disappointed. The menu is small but filled the most important dishes such as ramen/udon, gyoza and sashimi. We must say we loved this place and as an added bonus they do delivery.
