Travel Guide To Udawalawe- If you visit Sri Lanka in hopes of seeing some elephants in the wild, then you must spend a few days in Udawalawe. Here, you will find the largest concentration of wild elephants and even have the chance to get up close to them on the side of the road!
We headed to Udawalawe following our trip to Yala. We were excited to see these gentle giants in the wild and knew we would have a great chance of seeing more in Udawalawe.
On the drive from Yala, we actually passed 4 giant elephants just on the side of the road! It was an unforgettable experience and we felt extremely lucky to be so close to these incredible animals.
How To Get There
There are only two main ways to travel to Udawalawe, by bus, or by taxi. As there are no train stops nearby these are the only real options available.

Thing To Do
Safaris
The main thing to see and do in this wonderful part of Sri Lanka are the safaris. Much like Yala, the main attraction is the sanctuary’s and here you’ll find the Udawalawe Sanctuary. As with most safaris, you are able to ride on the back of a jeep and experience the wonderful wildlife Sri Lanka has to offer. Fun fact, while we were both on the way to Udawalawe, we stopped several times to see some elephants that were on the edge of the sanctuary. As we had stayed within the boundaries of the Udawalawe Sanctuary, we actually got to see these beautiful animals on the side of the road.
Place To Eat
In all honesty, there isn’t much around the main area to eat. We found it easiest to eat our guest house. The owners were lovely and they fixed us food for lunch and dinner. The food here was incredible and homemade.
