It’s okay to not be okay. We can’t be our happy, bubbly selves all the time. Sometimes there are outside factors weighing in on our lives, and sometimes we just get stuck in weird moods but don’t really know why. We find ourselves in this ‘funk,’ unmotivated, sad, and discouraged.
Recently I found myself in this total slump of a mood. I was feeling extremely unmotivated, down on myself and upset, but I didn’t know why. I sat in bed for the entire day sulking and confused. Maybe it was hormonal mood swings, who knows. All I can tell you was that I was completely fixated on being upset, yet I couldn’t exactly pinpoint what was causing me so much distress. Frustrating, I know.
In doing a full day’s worth of self-reflection and trying to understand why I was feeling this way, I came to the conclusion that there indeed was some underlying factors contributing to my ‘funk.’ While I will refrain from sharing all of my personal issues with you; I will say that having some time to truly reflect did help. It felt good to be able to compartmentalize where this feeling was coming from and willfully acknowledging that there were some valid reasons behind my mood.
After this bad day of mine, I decided not to get down on myself for essentially throwing my day away. Instead… I realized I was upset, allowed myself to be upset, recognized why I was upset and then decided I would wake up the next day with a fresh start.
Below I have highlighted some of my favourite ways to get out of this so-called ‘funk.’ If you find yourself in a slump, I hope these suggestions can help you get back to your normal self in no time!
How To Get Yourself Out of a Funk
Turn Off Social Media
Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge social media advocate and think it’s great for so many different things. Nevertheless, when you’re feeling crappy the last thing you want to do is log on and see everyone living their ‘best lives,’ in a moment when you are not in a good place mentally. You don’t want to see Becky on her Maldives holiday, or your girlfriends out together at brunch. So just put it away! Taking a social media break will do wonders for your mental health especially when you’re not feeling your best.
Play Music
Music is extremely therapeutic! Sometimes all we need to do to elevate our mood is to throw on our favourite artist and jam out. I am guilty of blasting my speakers in my room and having my own personal (sometimes George is invited) dance party every now and again to get myself back on track.
Get Outside
Get some fresh air. Being stuck in bed, or in your house is not always the best. Your environment really plays a role in your overall mood. When I get upset and I choose to stay in bed, I find that I have a much harder time shaking my bad mood. Get outside, go for a walk, and clear your mind.

Workout
Personally, I never used to be a fan of working out. I didn’t look forward to going to the gym at all. My whole life, I would get these spurts of going to the gym or signing up for classes. I would be really consistent for about a week, and then immediately find something that got in my way. Then going five days a week somehow turned into going once, or twice, every other week.
Recently though, I decided to really push myself. I began doing at-home workouts and held myself accountable for exercising 5 times a week for 3 weeks straight. This time something clicked. I think 3 weeks was enough time for my body to not only see the results but feel them. Now I know that if I don’t exercise, my body and most importantly my head doesn’t feel right!
It’s a known fact that when you work out you release endorphins. So try working out, I promise it will make you feel better.
Read a Book
Once again, reading was another hobby I never really enjoyed up until recently. I was always that kid that skimmed through books in University, never really reading a full page and somehow got by. Reading always used to give me headaches too, which was a huge reason why I refrained from doing it. Nevertheless, I began to find books that actually interested me and worked out a way to read a little at a time. Reading can be a great escape and can help you get your mind off things.

Plan a Self Care Day
Sometimes the only thing we need is to give our bodies a little extra TLC. Try taking an extra hot bath, go get a massage, find a fun new face mask, or go get your nails done. These little extra luxuries can often make you feel a million times better.
Journal
Writing out your feelings is super therapeutic. A huge reason I am falling in love with blogging is that I am creating an outlet to let out my feelings. Even if you don’t want your thoughts to be public, you can definitely journal. Sometimes writing, letting it all out can really help you to move on from the issues you are having.
Cook
I am not the best cook yet, but I do know that every time I am in the kitchen it is a fun way to be creative. Cooking something new can help you get your mind sorted. Try making a new recipe, or baking some yummy treats for yourself!
Meditation
A morning mediation is such a great way to get your day started off on the right foot. I have found that even when I take a quick ten minutes to collect my thoughts and put my mind in a positive place it really helps. I use an app called Mediation on my phone and try to do at least one a week if I can.
Overall, it is important to realize that we all have bad days. We all have moments of uncertainty, sadness and confusion. Just know you are not alone! I hope these tips can help you move forward in a positive direction.
